in memory of hinoki | Isamu Hazama

A carefully nurtured hinoki forest was cut down in 2023 due to a landslide, and the local people kindly gave the logs to me. In this region, the forestry industry is becoming unmanageable due to decreasing population and its industrial structure, and more and more forests are being left unmanaged and abandoned. This hinoki cypress, planted with hope, met a sad end in the form of a landslide. I felt that something like a memorial should be created. I kept the shape of the tree itself and developed it into a book shape, suitable for relating a story about this forest.
